Black Bag Collections Have Residents Up in Arms

Cardiff Switch's to Fortnightly Refuse CollectionsAs Cardiff Council ponders the decision to move over to fortnightly refuse collections whilst at the same time insisting residents undertake the lions share of the recycling duties there remains a hard-core of residents who are likely to fight the new initiative all the way to court, where they will most likely find themselves fined £100 for their trouble.

Having family in Bridgend I already have experience of the fortnightly black bag collections/seperate recycling, and I have to say it works quite well and reduces black bag rubbish down to under a bag a week for a family of 5.

It doesn’t take all that long for the children to become involved finding out which rubbish goes in which bag, and thereafter it becomes just a matter of course.

Initially, Cardiff residents are likely to be a bit reluctant as lets face it, nobody is keen on change. Especially so if the council carries out its threat to levy fines on residents not quite so fastidious with their recycling effort.

A £100 pound fine which costs £10,000 to collect through the legal process simply doesn’t make sense so lets not even go there.

But if the ‘rubbish police’ give the residents time to adjust and work with them while they do, 18 months from now it will be the norm, so lets bring it on and get recycling.
